Special Interest Group Meeting Notes: Digital Preservation SIG 12/18/2024

Notes from the most recent meetings of special interest groups at Southeastern

December 18, 2024

The Digital Preservation SIG met on December 18, 2024 via Zoom
Topic: Open Discussion /  Meeting Topics for 2025

Meeting Notes

A meeting attendee showed their digital asset register (inventory). The inventory included the "standard" elements (Titles, Formats, Extent, Dates, etc.) and also included columns to track files as they were copied from their current storage location (Google Drive) to other storage locations (local hard drive and Southeastern's Digital Dark Archive). It's working for the organization! They are using Bagger to bag content and generate checksums so that files can  be verified. Some larger folders with a/v files did not validate. It's all a lot of work. Learning a lot as we go.

Ideas for DigPres SIG in 2025:

  • Demo on Bagger and other tools.
  • Discussion/demos of workflows from beginning to end.
  • Advocacy - how to talk to administrators, budgetary people at your organization to get support and resources for DigPres.
  • Digital Preservation Policies.

It was suggested to give people a prompt before the meeting - come with an issue or concern. Provide a way for them to submit questions prior to a meeting. Encourage people to share ideas or ask questions in the Google group as they come up. Then we know where everyone is and can have focused discussions to meet current needs.
