Presentation Links

Emily Wager and Danielle Rosenberg from the New York State Library presented on the different resources available at the New York State Library. This includes NY newspapers, legal materials, a genealogy collection, medical resources, digital collections, government documents, various databases, and manuscripts and special collections.

Notes

Do you ever scan non-consecutive chapters from a book?

  • Yes, will scan non-consecutive chapters.
  • One library said they typically scan around 10%
  • One library will scan 49%
  • Different policies for databases due to licensing restrictions
  • If you have reached certain copyright limits, you might need to pay some royalties at Copyright Clearance Center

Does anyone have any projects they are working on?

  • ILL trends to be a little lighter in the summer. A lot of people take vacations over the summer.
  • NYSL working with the IDS Project on the Crosslink project. Trying to get it so it works with the catalog. This system is going to work with ISO standards

How do you explain ILL to people who are not familiar with it?

  • Simplest explanations are best.
  • It can be a challenge to differentiate between holds and inter-library loan. Make sure to define terminology.
  • Be sure to ask when they need it by and clarify how long ILL can take to arrive.

Graphic Novels & ILL:

  • Graphic novels: give me the ISBN!!! It can be hard to identify the needed one since there are a lot of volumes.
  • So many different series.
  • Sometimes volumes are combined into one single volume. It's important to know if that is the case.
  • Graphic novels are really big right now.

Does anybody get ILL where they only allow in-person?

  • Library of Congress only allows for in-library use of their materials.
  • It is important to ask your patrons first if in-library use is okay.
  • Do it for materials if they are rare.
  • One library had transparencies that were needed within a book. They made it library-use only and made a note of how many transparencies there were before and after the item was lent.

What’s the most interesting thing you guys have either loaned or received?

  • A man was able to get a book his great-grandfather wrote in the 1800s.
  • Once got a book that was huge and it was about the costumes in the star wars film. There were up close images of the costumes, including Queen Amadala’s costumes.
  • Autographed copy of something from Star Trek
  • Really obscure B movie
  • ILL also gives you the chance to find cool things in your own collection. There are lots of interesting adervtisements in old newspapers. In an old architectural journal there was information on suburban houses. It was $5,000 for the whole house. A book on children and their favorite toys from around the world.

Next Meeting

Next spring / summer, could have a meeting in the garden at Good Samaritan Hospital (located in Suffern N.Y.)

Maybe SUNY New Paltz

Some expressed an interest in making a trip to the state library. During Advocacy Week there is a tour available to library staff that goes through the library.
