A small group met on January 30, 2024.
This session of the ILI SIG jumps off from the last session where we discussed turning “Big Ideas” into fun and actionable content for students.
The goal of this session is to pick one of our “Big Ideas” and develop a game or activity from it.
“Big Ideas”
- Information Production - who and why
- Make something gamified or interactive?
- Critical Thinking Skills and Sources
- Reading sources critically
- Source Incorporation
- How do I take the research and put it into my paper?
The group decided to run with the Source Incorporation Idea
Elizabeth from Vassar mentioned how she often has very little time in her library workshops to incorporate any kind of activity, so the goal now became how do we convey the concepts of source incorporation into as quick an activity as possible.
How should we do this? A physical game? In class group project? Online tools, such as kahoot, jeopardy, etc.?
Participants worked collaboratively to develop a game called “Five in Five”.
- Students would work in groups.
- A research topic would be presented (either written on the board, or PowerPoint slide, something like that) with 3 paragraph subtopics.
- Each group would then receive 5 sources (title and abstract information), and would be instructed to read through the information for each article and identify which subtopic they would use each particular source in.
- Students would not have to incorporate all 5 articles, they would use their discretion to decide which sources would work best for each of the subtopics.
- This activity is intended to take 5 minutes, thus the title, with a brief discussion at the end.
