Notes

Information Technology SIG 6/17

How often should we meet? What would people like to talk about?

Authentication - implementation of openathens?

  • Going to have condensed testing over the summer
  • Good topic for a future SIG (mid-fall)

Learning Lab - Pearl River:

  • School District public library.
  • Learning lab - do up to 30 programs a month. From kindergartners to seniors. Do coding, robotics.
  • Edison Robot - $50 can do anything from drag and drop to python with them.
  • Trying to find new tricks for the learning lab.
  • 25 new programs since the pandemic hit.
  • Packaged up robots and allowed them to circulated (run on a cloud based program).

How is tech support going to be managed with social distancing?

  • Someone mentioned getting a 6 foot cable to help share a screen.
  • Current plan is to assist people as much as possible from afar - keep it short and simple.
  • Online computer labs - time slots can be useful.
  • Doing all programming remotely.

Seeing more checkouts of technology products, typically chromebooks.

Some technology issues when remote  but not nearly as much as might be expected.

Zack could do a TDNet talk down the road -- it might be an interesting topic to some of the academic folks in particular.

Moving forward, going to have a specific discussion topic for the meeting.

Southeastern is going to be remote for the indefinite future. It’s easier for people to attend. Our conference room is not equipped for social distancing (not big enough for spaces between people).

We could put something tentative on the calendar for august 6th at 2 pm. Arianna can talk about some of the work she’s been doing with APIs.
