Special Interest Group Archive: Resource Sharing 10/13/2017

These are the notes from meetings dating back to 2015.

Resource Sharing SIG

The first meeting of the Resource Sharing SIG was held on Friday, October 13 at Southeastern and was facilitated by Theresa Davis of Mount Saint Mary College.

The following notes are from the group conversation.

The next meeting will be on February 16, 2018 from 1pm-4pm

Notes from the meeting

Potential Topics

  • Optimize workflows
  • ILL Horror Stories – rules & implementations
  • Policies & lending rules
  • New OCLC product when ILLIAD goes away – Tipasa
  • ELD

ELD – worth getting now that they deal with lost items and you can just drop off the items with a courier.

ILL Policies & horror stories

  • some libraries limit the amount of active requests patrons have (but that can get in the way of research programs for some patrons who need a lot of material.) It encourages patrons to think about how much they order
  • don’t lend DVDs or other media, because of the breakage issue
  • Instant acquisitions programs allow you to buy what is ordered without having to borrow it.
  • Most places don’t ILL textbooks, but it can be a way to get circ stats back up.
  • Not to ILL books that are already owned by the institution
  • No special collections / history / archives (perhaps copies are OK if the item is in good condition.)
  • Philosophy: The object of the library is to have no books on the shelf. It’s great to have the books go out, and that can inform your rules about extending due dates.
  • Professors who don’t return materials, and people who don’t pick up ILLs.

Workflows

  • Excel spreadsheets for mail merging for patrons for SEAL requests – typed in manually
  • Organizational strategy – set up systems so that they can be used by other people in the organization.
